Meet Our Campus Reps: Akinwale

Hi, I'm Akinwale Akinyoade.

I'm a National Diploma holder in Mass Communication from Yaba College of Technology and currently major in English Language as the University of Lagos. A firm believer in the power of the word for social change and creation of awareness and enlightenment, I serve as a member of the Editorial Team for Campus Express Newspaper; the first national campus newspaper delivered to all campuses in Lagos state. Asides my editorial duties, I also handle the entertainment/lifestyle section of the newspaper and its website at www.campusexpress.com. I am also a contributing writer on a number of blogs such as www.olofofo9ja.com, www.forcampus.com, a former correspondent for entertainment portal www.naijawhistle.com.
I served briefly as a content developer for Betazoo.net while a student of Yabatech during a school strike. I also do my own personal writing of fiction and the occasional social issue article on www.datfreakwriter.wordpress.com and my former blog www.lasgidikid.blogspot.com

In 2012, I was announced as one of the six winners for Positive Action for Treatment Access (PATA) radio-drama script writing competition, a feat which encouraged me in opening my blog to have a collection of my works in one place rather than the random writings. While in 2013, the Association of Mass Communication Students (AMACOS) Yabatech Chapter awarded me the award for Most Effective Legislator in recognition for my selfless service and dedication in carrying out my duties as the Chief Whip of the Students Representative Council (SRC).

Not just passionate about writing alone, the spoken word also holds appeal for me and perharps this could be account for the numerous debates that I participated in while in secondary school and my having my Student Industrial Work Experience (SIWES) at radio station Metro Fm 97.7. As a SIWES student I was assigned duties as deemed fit by my supervisor which included coverage of events, reporting and writing of news, sourcing for contents for programs, brainstorming for creative ideas and attending of meetings concerning SIWES students. I also present on Unilag FM 103.1 during a magazine program Onstage alongside other budding On-Air-Personalities, broadcast on Sundays between the hours of 1pm to 2pm.

The experience of being a campus representative for 9jeducation has afforded me the opportunity to interact with both secondary school students and tertiary institution students on possible programs that they could benefit from. I have been to schools to talk to authorities about 9jeducation and its mission. I have also carried out polls concerning social issues affecting the youths and the nation. As a 9jeducation representative I also write for the 9jeducation blog at www.blog.9jeducation.org and also take online courses to improve writing and language skills at www.edx.org. It has taught me the importance of research in writing of any article that concerns the general public as writing with hard facts rather than sentiments and hearsay gives your writing credibility. The position as a rep for 9jeducation keeps tasking me to push myself to my utmost best and has allowed me to discover other sides of me that I didn't know existed before.
